Residence and Occupation Permits in Mauritius
Who would not like to live and/or work in Mauritius? After all, the island boasts a charming setting, a healthy economy, a good climate, the absence of social or political tension, profitable fiscal laws… A residence and/or occupation permit is required in order to be able to enjoy all the advantages that Mauritius has to offer.
Foreigners have various options for investing, working, living or retiring in Mauritius. Below are the residence permits and the conditions under which they are granted, respectively:
RESIDENCE PERMIT VALID FOR 10 YEARS
Investor
Permitted occupancy as an investor is obtained if a sum of at least USD 50,000 is invested in a business activity. If you wish to bring state-of-the-art equipment as part of the USD 50,000 investment, you will need to transfer a minimum amount of USD 25,000 and the balance of USD 25,000 for state-of-the-art equipment. Retired
The residence permit for retired non-citizens is granted to individuals aged over 50 with a regular and stable pension of USD 1,500 or its equivalent in foreign currency per month, or a total of USD 18,000 or its equivalent in foreign currency per year, in a Mauritian bank account in their name. Independent contractor
In order to obtain the Occupation Permit Self-Employed and be able to work as a freelancer, consultant or freelancer in Mauritius, you need to have capital of 35,000 USD or the equivalent in foreign currency, as well as two letters of intent from potential clients. Read our article HERE.
RESIDENCE PERMIT VALID FOR 20 YEARS
The 02 possible cases for obtaining a 20-year permanent residence permit (PRP):
1- After spending at least 3 years as a resident of Mauritius meeting the following criteria:
Investor
Have an annual gross income of at least MUR 15,000,000 in the 3 consecutive years preceding the application for a permanent residence permit OR generate cumulative sales of MUR 45,000,000 over a 3-year period following the application for a permanent residence permit.
Retired
During the 3 years preceding the application for permanent residence. Transfer at least 54,000 USD or the equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency to your bank account in Mauritius.
Professional
Have a monthly base salary of at least MUR 150,000 for 3 consecutive years preceding the application for permanent residence. Independent contractor Annual income of at least MUR 3,000,000 for 3 consecutive years preceding application for permanent residence.
2- Investment of at least USD 375,000 in a commercial activity:
The list of eligible activities is as follows:
Education, construction, infrastructure, film and communication, audiovisual, financial services, banking, warehousing and IPO-related activities, insurance, environmentally friendly and energy products, fishing and marine resources, ICT, free zone, manufacturing, food processing, leisure, marina development and tourism.
RESIDENCE PERMIT BY ACQUISITION OF PROPERTY IN MAURITIUS VALID FOR AS LONG AS THE PROPERTY IS IN YOUR NAME
It is possible to obtain a residence permit by purchasing a property for a minimum price of 375,000 USD. This permit is like a bonus that you receive immediately upon acquisition of the property.

PROFESSIONAL RESIDENCE PERMIT VALID FOR THE DURATION OF THE EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT
To obtain an occupation permit as an employed professional, you need to sign an employment contract with a multinational or a local company in Mauritius, with a minimum monthly base salary of MUR 30,000.
The duration of the permit depends on the length of the employment contract, with a maximum of 10 years.
Professionals may also apply for a short-term occupation permit not exceeding 9 months. However, the permit can only be extended once, for a maximum of 3 months.
YOUNG PROFESSIONAL OCCUPATION PERMIT (YPOP) VALID FOR 3 YEARS
This permit is for foreigners who have completed tertiary studies in Mauritius. It entitles them to work on the island for a period of three years. After three years of employment, an application can be made for an "Occupation Permit as Professional", to extend the duration of the permit.
Criteria for obtaining an Occupation Permit as Professional:
a. The foreign national must have obtained a bachelor's degree from a university or other institution of higher learning recognized by the island's Tertiary Education Commission.
b. The application for the permit must be made within 6 months of the release of the exam results. It is important to note that this criterion is not taken into account if the permit holder wishes to join another company before the end of the three-year period.
c. The foreign national must join a company operating either in the Artificial Intelligence, Biotechnology, Financial Technology, Robotics, Financial Services, Computer Technology sector, or another sector approved by the Ministry.

GOOD TO KNOW: Spouses and children, whether yours, your spouse's or legally adopted, under the age of 24, are eligible for a residence permit (as dependents) not exceeding the duration of that of the holder of an Occupation Permit or Residence Permit.
