We have listed activities that you can enjoy in Mauritius. We have also mentioned some places you have to visit by all means. The island might be only 45 kilometers wide and 65 kilometers long, but it has some roads with some really amazing landscapes to go through.
The Black River Coastal Road
Going through villages like Flic en Flac, Tamarin, Case Noyale and La Gaulette, you will get to see one of the best sceneries of Mauritius. You will come across the saltpans in Tamarin, with mountains in its background. As you drive farther, mangroves stand in the water, protecting the shores from soil erosion. On the way to Case Noyale and La Gaulette, watch out for the Banyan trees. You will not spot Tarzan, but the trees are very impressive and you might see some people having conversations under them.
The next village is that of Le Morne, a place of historical significant. The height of its mountain will leave you impressed. You might want to stop your car at La Prairie Beach. It is very inviting, with large stretches of grass and sand, ideal for a picnic. As you continue to drive, you will reach one of the most beautiful, if not the most beautiful road of Mauritius: the Macondé road. The lush green trees offer a contrast to the shiny blue of the seawater and the grayish rock. Take the time to park the car and take the staircase onto the Macondé rock; the view will leave you in awe.
Bois des Amourettes
Located in the South-Eastern district of Grand Port, the Bois des Amourettes village has some amazing views to offer. You might want to halt and take your time to contemplate the landscape here as well. A literal translation of the village’s name is “the forest of flings”. However, its name might originate from the presence of “amourette” or snakewood trees long ago in the area. Its jetty is about 190 metres long. It offers a view on Ile au Phare, Ile aux Aigrettes and Ile de la Passe. The mountain ranges that stand before the jetty are also very impressive. You will be left dreaming on the bench before the rocky shores.
The Terre Rouge-Verdun-Trianon Road
Let’s head to the North now, onto the Terre Rouge-Verdun-Trianon link road. Man has drawn his way, an asphalted road through nature. The result is captivating. The highway goes through the mountain ranges and the hills. Sugarcane fields are along the road at some places. Junctions lead to different villages, like Crève Coeur or Long Mountain. At the highest point of the road, you are able to see the greenery in its natural state, buildings appear small, and far away stands the horizon. Don’t worry, there is a lay-by lane there, so that you may halt and click some pictures.
The Tea Route
Located on the central plateau, the starting point of this road is Curepipe and its ending point is Saint Aubin. It is called the “Tea Route” because of the large tea-plant fields along the road and because it goes through Bois Chéri, an area known for tea cultivation. In fact, there is even a brand of tea leaves named after the place.
