The self-employed permit in Mauritius or Occupation Permit Self-Employed is a permit to work as a freelancer, consultant or independent professional in Mauritius. For professional activities not included in this category, the investor residence permit is the most appropriate.
The self-employed permit is valid for 10 years and authorizes its holder to live and work in Mauritius as a self-employed person, provided that his or her business project complies with current Mauritian legislation. In this sense, the self-employed permit allows you to offer professional services to local and international clients.
As a self-employed non-citizen, you are obliged to declare your total income for the year and subtract your business expenses. You are also required to pay 15% value-added tax (VAT), if and only if your annual sales exceed MUR 6,000,000.
Conditions for obtaining a 10-year renewable self-employed permit in Mauritius:
- - Presentation of a well-defined professional project.
- - A business plan.
- - Working alone without being able to hire.
- - Diplomas in accordance with the project.
- - Existing potential clients in Mauritius or abroad.
- - Have a capital of USD 35,000 or the equivalent in foreign currency in an unblocked Mauritian account. Once the applications have been validated by the Economic Development Board, this capital can be used freely (purchase of a vehicle or rental of a villa).
- - Achieving an annual turnover approximately € 17,000 from the third year after obtaining permit.

To obtain a self-employed permit, you will have to pay USD 1,000 for government charges. There will be an additional fee of USD 400 for your eligible beneficiaries.
As with all residence permits, this permit is granted to the applicant. Spouses and children are entitled to apply for a dependent residence permit.
