    Dependent permit in Mauritius

    The dependent permit or family occupation permit is an authorization that allows close family members of a principal holder of an occupation or residence permit in Mauritius to become residents in the country.

    In Mauritius, the dependent permit is granted to the spouse, parents, dependent children or legally adopted children or children from another marriage who are unmarried and not engaged in any economic activity, aged under 24. In other words, the dependent permit allows the family of the principal holder to reside legally in Mauritius and enjoy the same rights and privileges as the principal holder.

    Once the principal applicant for a Mauritian residence permit has obtained his or her permit from the competent entities, his or her rightful claimants can then apply for the dependent permit.

    All dependent persons are required to apply to the Economic Development Board Mauritius. Once the complete file has been submitted and accepted, the dependent permit will be issued within 10 days.

    The application for a dependent permit in Mauritius is closely linked to an existing residence permit, be it a self-employed or professional permit, an investor permit, a retired person's permit or a permit obtained following the purchase of a property worth at least 375,000 USD under the PDS, IRS, RES, R+2, IHS and Smart City programs.

    The dependent permit in Mauritius is valid for the same period as that of the principal holder of the residence permit. Consequently, the duration of the dependent permit cannot exceed that of the principal permit holder.

    It is forbidden for the holder of a dependent permit to work on the Mauritian market. However, if they wish to work. It is necessary to submit an application for an investment or self-employment permit. If hired by a local company, the employer must apply for a professional occupation permit.
